Lead Acid VS. Lithium Batteries: What Are The Best Solar Batteries For Energy Storage?

Solar batteries are elements that store the energy produced by solar panels. In many cases, this allows the installation to be independent of the electricity grid, having electricity at any time, even outside the hours of sunlight.

In this article we are going to compare 2 types of batteries analyzing their advantages and limitations: lithium batteries and lead acid batteries.

Lithium batteries vs Lead Acid Batteries

Within each type of battery you can find different models or variations. For example, lead acid batteries can be Gel, AMG, etc. And for this we are going to talk about different important aspects when deciding on a battery, such as capacity and number of cycles, price, charging efficiency, etc.

Number of charge and discharge cycles

The number of cycles is one of the main characteristics to take into account in a battery along with its capacity.

Discharge depth

The depth of discharge is the percentage of the energy that the battery allows us to extract when fully charged. For example, if you have 100 A in your battery and you get 50 A that represents a 50% depth of discharge.

Charging Efficiency

It is a simple concept. When the sun hits your solar panel and generates electricity, how much of that electricity actually accumulates in the battery?

Lithium batteries have a higher efficiency than lead acid batteries. Lithium has an efficiency close to 100% (between 95 and 99%). In other words, practically every kW that your solar panels produce will go 100% to the batteries.

Price

When it comes to thinking about batteries from an economic point of view, it must be done from two perspectives: the initial investment and the cost per cycle.

The purchase price of a lithium battery is higher than that of lead acid batteries, so the initial investment for the installation will be more important if you decide on lithium.

Battery warranty

Generally speaking, since the guarantee is a commercial aspect that can change in different brands and models, lithium batteries offer a 10-year guarantee. These types of batteries usually incorporate an electronic system that monitors and controls the state of the battery cells, making their useful life much longer.

Lead acid batteries do not have these control systems so their life will depend a lot on how you treat them. In general, these types of batteries offer a 2-year warranty.
