Bluesun has delivered a 1MW PCS + 2MWh battery energy storage system for a solar project in Bulgaria, integrating photovoltaic generation, battery storage and intelligent energy management into one complete system.
The project works with a 1MW solar power plant and uses a 1MW PCS to manage power flow between the battery system and the site. The battery side provides 2MWh of energy storage capacity for more flexible energy use and system operation.

1MW PCS Matched with 2MWh Battery Storage
The system uses a 1MW PCS together with 2MWh of battery capacity. These two figures describe different parts of the energy storage system.
The 1MW PCS defines the maximum power that can be charged or discharged at a given time, while the 2MWh battery capacity defines how much energy can be stored.
At full 1MW output, 2MWh of battery capacity theoretically represents about two hours of energy storage before system losses and operating limits are considered. Actual operating time depends on the EMS strategy, battery state of charge and project requirements.
Solar Generation and Battery Storage Working Together
A solar power plant generates most of its electricity during daylight hours, but electricity demand and grid conditions do not always follow the same pattern.
By adding battery storage, part of the available energy can be stored and used later according to the operating strategy set by the EMS.
This gives the project more flexibility in how solar energy is used and how power is exchanged with the grid.
Depending on the site requirements, a solar-plus-storage system like this can support:
- Solar energy shifting
- Peak shaving
- Energy use during different electricity price periods
- Higher use of locally generated solar power
- More flexible grid interaction
EMS Controls the Energy Flow
For a project of this scale, the battery and PCS cannot operate as isolated pieces of equipment.
The Energy Management System, or EMS, coordinates the operating logic of the complete system. It monitors key system conditions and manages when the battery should charge or discharge.
This allows the storage system to respond to solar generation, battery status and the actual energy requirements of the project.
Safety Monitoring Is Built into the System
The project also includes fire protection and temperature monitoring, which are important parts of large-scale battery energy storage system design.
Continuous monitoring helps operators understand battery operating conditions and respond to abnormal conditions more quickly.
For MW-scale BESS projects, safety, control and communication need to be considered together with battery capacity and PCS power from the beginning of the system design.
Why 1MW / 2MWh Matters in BESS Design
Battery energy storage systems are usually described using both power and energy capacity because one number alone does not explain how the system can operate.
- 1MW: the PCS power rating
- 2MWh: the battery energy storage capacity
The relationship between these two values determines how much power the system can deliver and how long the stored energy can support that power level.
Different projects require different ratios. Some applications need higher power for shorter periods, while others need more battery capacity for longer energy shifting.
A Complete 1MW / 2MWh Energy Storage Solution
Projects like this involve more than selecting a PCS and battery system. The complete solution also requires energy management, battery management, electrical protection, communication, thermal management and safety monitoring.
For customers planning a similar configuration, Bluesun provides a 1MW / 2MWh AC coupling energy storage system for large commercial, industrial and solar-plus-storage applications.
Another MW-Scale Storage Project in Bulgaria
This project adds another large-scale solar and battery storage application to Bluesun’s project experience in Bulgaria.
More importantly, it shows how solar generation, PCS, battery storage, EMS and safety systems can be integrated into one coordinated energy solution.
For future projects, the final PCS power, battery capacity and operating strategy should still be selected according to the actual solar generation profile, site load and project objectives.
