Trump raises tariffs on Chinese products - including batteries

Although the damage is mainly for batteries, modules and inverters, tariff increases for US module components and 15% for lithium-ion batteries battery are not good news for both areas.

Under the leadership of President Trump, tariffs continue.

Last Friday, the US Trade Representative (USTR) announced the most recent increase in a series of tariffs on Chinese goods, including a 25% to 30% increase in imports from China worth US$250 billion, effective October 1. This applies to the first three sections of the 301 tariffs - including the September round, starting at 10% and increasing to 25%.

These three waves cover solar cells, modules and inverters, but are unlikely to have a major impact on imports. Due to the combination of anti-dumping, countervailing duty or CVD-201 clauses and now new 301 clause tariffs, US shipments of lithium batteryand components to China have been limited, all of which add up to a high price.

As for the inverter, the damage has been completed and the supply chain has changed. Sungrow has a 1 GW facility in India to supply US customers, Enphase produces products in Mexico through its manufacturing partner Flex, and Huawei completely withdraws from the US.

Ironically, US module manufacturers - those who theoretically introduce measures - may be the hardest hit by other industries, because clause 301 also applies to the parts they need, including aluminum that is usually assembled from China. The frame and backboard are on the land of the United States.

The US Trade Representative Office is also raising tariffs on the latest round of Section 301 - from 10% to 15% - new measures will take effect on Sunday. The affected goods include lithium-ion batteries. Since two-thirds of the world's lithium-ion battery manufacturing takes place in China, and Tesla's Nevada plant is the only gigawatt-scale manufacturing facility in the United States, this could have a greater impact.

As a result, demand for lithium-ion batteries in South Korea, Japan and Poland is likely to increase - these countries are the countries with the largest manufacturing capacity in China and the United States.10 kwh battery
